This year’s Drug Take Back Day in Manitowoc County was more successful this year than last year.
New Manitowoc County Drug Unit Leader Andy Beck said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the event at Froedtert Holy Family Memorial took in about 450 pounds of prescription drugs, compared to 290 the year before.
Every year, the event encourages residents with expired or unwanted prescription drugs, creams, and pet medications to get rid of them.
Beck says that after the collection, the drugs are properly disposed of by being thrown in an incinerator.
Bret Oswald with the Drug Unit reminded residents that police have drug locker areas, too, to drop off unwanted meds.
“Throughout the year, citizens can drop those medications off and law enforcement collects them, and then ultimately, that’s what yields the drug take back events,” he tells WOMT.
It’s important to always remove medications from the container and put them in a plastic bag before being dropped off. There will be a second Drug Take Back Day in October of this year.
