The City of Manitowoc is gearing up to celebrate Arbor Day.
The city will plant a tree donated by the Izaak Walton League at Halvorsen Park following a proclamation and reading of the Dr. Suess book The Lorax at Bethany Lutheran School.
Representatives from the Wisconsin DNR will also present the city with its 1013 Tree City USA award.
It’s the 41st year in a row that the city has been named a part of the Tree City USA community.
The award honors the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management.
The city will also get its 12th consecutive Growth Award for planting trees around town.
Arbor Day was proclaimed in Nebraska in 1874, after which over a million trees were planted around the state.
The day became a national holiday in 1970 because of efforts from President Richard Nixon.
