Wisconsin’s Supreme Court, dominated by liberal justices, is deliberating over the extent of the state legislature’s authority.
The court heard arguments yesterday in a case brought forth by Governor Tony Evers, who seeks to curtail the powers of the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee.
Evers contends that the committee, controlled by Republicans, overstepped its authority by withholding pay raises for University of Wisconsin employees.
However, Justice Jill Karofsky expressed concerns that granting the governor’s request would diminish the legislative branch’s role as a co-equal branch of government.
The court has not announced a timeline for its decision.
