Two Manitowoc Common Council members will not be returning to the Council for a two-year term.
Mayor Justin Nickels recognized 5th District Alderwoman Darian Kaderabek and 9th District Alderman Steve Czekala for their time on the board.
Nickels says Kaderabek served one term in the Council, which included serving on five different boards and commissions.
He continued saying that while she spoke about some tough issues, it was always with the citizens in mind.
Kaderabek says she was grateful for the experience.
“I learned so much about our community and how it works,” she described to those in attendance. “And, it just has been wonderful working not only with other members of the council but with every single employee of the City of Manitowoc.”
Following her, Nickels spoke about Czekala, saying that while they won’t agree politically, they were able to do a lot of work to better the city and would still be friends.
Czekala was first elected to the Council in 2016 and served on numerous boards and committees, including a two-year period as council president.
Czekala thanked everyone for allowing him to serve.
“Especially new people coming, and you know, helping me along and keeping me pointed in the right direction and learning how things work,” he said. “And, for those that don’t know, there are a lot of moving pieces involved in running a city. I mean, like, holy crap.”
William DeBates will take over the District 5 seat after Kaderabek announced she’s decided not to run, while Brett Norell will represent the 9th District after beating Czekala in this month’s (April) election.
The new Council will be sworn in tonight (April 16th) during an organizational session.
