Manitowoc Public School District’s superintendent says it’s incredible how fast the district is climbing in terms of updated reading scores.
According to Jim Feil on the WCUB Breakfast Club, the district has seen a massive increase in reading proficiency for the third straight quarter in elementary and middle school.
According to data from Success for All, the school’s implemented curriculum, districtwide, about 49% of students read at their grade level, which is up from the baseline of 31% before the first quarter.
Feil says the district wanted to get it up to 50%.
“That was our end-of-year goal, that we thought was a real stretch goal for our teachers,” he explained. “It’s what we were shooting for at the end of the year and we’ve already hit that with the third quarter. “We anticipate that not only will we end the year good, but we will have a better report care next year.”
He says that the MPSD is returning to its top-tier status, which it’s had a history of.
Fiel also credited the board, specifically President Stacey Soeldner, for her work implementing SFA and a plan for the school district to move forward.
This past year’s school report card showed the district in the “meeting few expectations” category, second from the bottom of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction standards.
According to data from the district, the district has been improving reading scores for the last two quarters.
