The capital campaign for a new Lakeshore Humane Society is getting underway and is already off to a good start.
Director Tina Nichols said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that a couple who’s been a large supporter of the humane society has generously gifted a large donation to help kickstart the project, but more needs to be raised.
Nichols says remodeling or adding to their current location would cost more than building a new shelter.
“Our building has served its purpose but it’s very outdated,” she described. “We can’t remodel anymore. Our floors are all cracked up and things like that. So, we are very very outdated and don’t have the things that are needed to really give the animals even better care then we already do.”
The new shelter would include some new rooms, including a medical suite and a surgical room, to allow for the spaying and neutering of animals on-site.
About $1.5 million needs to be raised to build the new shelter.
Nichols says that, hopefully, ground will be broken by the end of the year.
