A unique event to raise money for the Reedsville FFA takes place next week.
The Pie and Labor Auction allows students to get paid to do 8 hours of manual labor, with some of the money going back to Reedsville’s FFA program.
FFA Director Katherine Novak tells Seehafer News that local businesses will bid on FFA students in an auction to work for them while also bidding for homemade pies.
Novak says she’s looking for certain businesses to come to the auction.
“Farms, like family farms, or agriculture-based businesses,” she stated. “Maybe some co-ops or retailer wholesalers, crop farm sales shops like seed companies or feed companies would be a good one too.”
Families who need some work done could also bid on students.
So far, 7 students have applied to work for whoever bids on them.
Doors for the event open at 6:30 at the Reedsville High School Gym, and before the auction, Novak says businesses and groups need to register.
“The students will likely have families that they have in mind that they want to buy them,” she described. “So, they can go around, or other businesses (to buy them), they can go around, before 7 pm to talk to those businesses as well.”
There will also be a profile for each student with what they want to do.
The actual event starts at 7:00 p.m.
Novak says although the idea seems a bit odd, it’s a win win for both students and the FFA organization because both earn some money and experience through work students could do in the future.
