Scammers are at it again, with different versions hitting different areas in Eastern Wisconsin.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office reports that the Joint Dispatch Center has received multiple calls from citizens regarding the so-called “Jury Duty Scam.”
Fraudsters have been calling residents, claiming to have a signed warrant for their failure to show up for jury duty.
The scammers have been using the names of current or former Sheriff’s Deputies, making the call seem relatively legitimate.
Meanwhile, in Sheboygan, the Police Department has been notified of scammers posing as officers or union leaders on the phone, asking for donations to the department.
Both law enforcement entities are reminding residents that police departments, banks, and judicial staff will never ask you to make a payment over the phone for any reason.
If you receive a call and are unsure, you are encouraged to hang up and call the actual phone number of the entity that was claiming to contact you.
If you feel that you have been a victim of fraud, you are encouraged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
