With thousands of Wisconsin Public Service and We Energies customers still without power, the City of Appleton and the Appleton Health Department are reminding residents how they can stay safe in the event of a long-term outage.
Residents are being asked to disconnect any appliances and electronics to avoid damage and electrical surges and to avoid opening the freezer and refrigerator if possible.
If you have a gas-powered oven or stove, it is important not to turn it on for use as a heat source.
Residents are also encouraged to use flashlights instead of candles for the same reason.
If you are out and about, avoid downed powerlines and drive slowly.
Additionally, since the power has been out for over 24 hours, the City of Appleton is inviting residents to go to the Appleton Public Library or to the Valley Transit building if they need to charge their phones or escape the cold.
