The city of Manitowoc is getting help from the US Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA announced last week that the Clipper City will get technical assistance through the Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program.
The program was created to develop smart growth solutions and strategies in ways that benefit human health and the environment.
The program’s focus in Manitowoc is to help a neighborhood on the Manitowoc River experiencing disinvestment due to the departure of the aluminum manufacturing industry.
The city will look at how they can find redevelopment opportunities to best address the transportation, housing, and other needs of the area.
Mayor Justin Nickels says it will be around the old Mirro Plant around a portion of Franklin Street.
He calls it a great opportunity for an area that might not get as much focus because grants the city is eligible for might not cover areas that aren’t directly downtown.
There are no dates yet for when projects in the area could get started.
