The Manitowoc Chiefs want to do a full upgrade to their football field.
The youth football program is celebrating 50 years this year and wants to use the facility more often than just during the football season.
Members from the program asked Monday (March 18th) for the support of the community and Manitowoc Common Council to support the “Field of Dreams” project.
Tackle Football Director Mike Panosh says the upgrades include:
“Lights, permanent bleachers, and a new scoreboard,” he explained. “Various improvements to the property.”
Panosh continued by saying this project is very important because of the club’s history and because of all the kids that play from all around Manitowoc.
He also doesn’t want the kids to accept second place concerning the facility they play at.
“We go to different facilities that have had upgrades over the years and they’re very nice,” he explained. “You think about here in Manitowoc some things we’ve done together as a community from the aquatic center to the upgraded baseball facility, what that’s done for that program. And I just believe, really really, strongly that what we are trying to do at the Chiefs can do that same kind of thing for football here in Manitowoc.”
He finished saying he wants the kids to play in a facility that they will be proud of, and that the community can be proud of.
The Common Council approved allowing the Chiefs to make improvements to their property. Alderman Mike Cummings, the football club’s president, says they will raise the money for the project and not ask the city for help.
The city could contribute by renaming Clay Pit Rd to Chiefs Way, which will be discussed in committee.
It’s not known right now how much the project will cost.
