Congressman Glenn Grothman has reintroduced a bill he says will save taxpayers an estimated $60 billion in the first year.
The Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act, which is co-sponsored by fellow Republican Congressmen Tim Burchett of Tennessee and Jim Baird of Indiana, aims to prevent non-citizens from receiving federal welfare benefits, including Social Security and Medicare, by establishing strict verification measures.
Grothman said in his announcement of the bill, “The number of those crossing illegally into the United States is overwhelming Border Patrol, American cities, and putting American citizens at risk…The Safeguarding Benefits for Americans Act will ensure benefits are available for U.S. citizens by decreasing the likelihood that people will cross into our country illegally in search of handouts.”
He also said that he wants to give immigrants “hand-ups” so they can “share the dignity that comes with an honest day’s work, just like my ancestors had when they came to this country.”
The CATO Institute also has an article about the bill, which goes into much greater detail.
