Two Canadian Lynx at Manitowoc’s Lincoln Park Zoo have been donated, even though they’ve been there for the last nine years.
City Parks and Recreation Division Manager Curtis Hall explains that the Minnesota Zoo, which “owned” the Lynx named Carver and Grant, decided to officially donate them to the Lincoln Park Zoo after first giving the Lynx for a long-term placement.
The Minnesota Zoo is a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and when they have a surplus of animals, they offer them up to others in the AZA in their network.
But when another group doesn’t want an animal, they look for non-AZA groups like the Lincoln Park Zoo.
The reason they still “owned” Carver and Grant was in case they needed them for a breeding recommendation through the AZA’s Species Survival Program, which isn’t expected anytime soon.
