This week is National Agriculture Week.
The Agriculture Council of America and the National Ag Day program was started in 1973 with the goal of teaching the public about everything the Ag Sector provides.
We spoke with Manitowoc County Ag Educator Angie Ulness, who said that agriculture boasts plenty of jobs for a wide variety of people.
“There’s 22 million full and part time jobs related to agriculture in the food sector,” she explained. “More than ever, there’s a need to get students involved, and also to recognize that this is a fast growing, technological field.”
While many people get into the industry through familial connections or growing up on a farm, Ulness said there are plenty of options for those who don’t have that kind of background.
“Whether it’s the agronomy portion of it, if you like being outside and working outside with plants, if you like animals and want to work with animals, or if you are really interested in STEM or technology,” she said. “There is so much more automation in agriculture than ever before, from drones to artificial intelligence.”
Ulness said, “the future is really bright” for the ag sector.
This week, which also boasts National Ag Day on Tuesday, is the perfect time for people to learn more about the industry and its ever-growing opportunities.
