In Lansing, Iowa, the Black Hawk Bridge, connecting western Wisconsin with Iowa, has been closed indefinitely following reports of structural movement, announced Wis-DOT officials Tuesday.
The historic bridge in Crawford County is deemed unsafe for drivers. This closure significantly impacts residents traveling between La Crosse and Prairie du Chien, as it is the sole crossing point over the Mississippi River into Iowa.
Local leaders express concerns about the disruption to commuters who work and reside on opposite sides of the bridge.
Efforts to address the issue involve plans to close the gap between two of the bridge’s piers, a process estimated to take at least two months.
