A Manitowoc veteran was before the Public Infrastructure Committee earlier this month, looking for a little bit of lenience.
The man resides in the 2700 block of Viebahn Street, which is due for an asphalt replacement later this year.
Where he lives used to be outside of the city limits, and when his driveway was constructed, it met county codes.
However, the residence is now inside the city limits and does not comply with the Manitowoc City code.
He recently received a letter from the city noting that he was going to have to pay the roughly $2,000 tab to get it fixed.
City Engineering Division Manager Greg Minikel told the five-man committee that the driveway as it sits would not affect the project as it is planned, so the committee approved allowing the driveway to remain unchanged.
The variance request will be in the consent agenda for the next full City Council meeting, which means unless someone pulls it out for more discussion, it will be passed.
Minikel tells us the Viebahn Street project will span from South 10th Street around the railroad tracks west of South 26th Street.
County Highway Commissioner Greg Grotegut tells Seehafer News that the roadway “should remain open to locals for most of the duration” of the project, but very few additional details have been locked in.
The start date will depend on when the City finishes the curb replacement, and the cost is unknown as the bidding period is still open for the asphalt and milling portions.
