Scammers are back at it again, this time in Brown County.
The Brown County Clerk’s Office is warning the public about a so-called Jury Duty Scam that has been affecting residents.
According to a report on WBAY TV, fraudsters posing as law enforcement have been calling residents claiming they failed to appear for jury duty.
They will then demand you either turn yourself in or pay them over the phone with a gift card.
Other targets have even received false payment notices in the mail, where they are also instructed to pay with a gift card.
Scammers almost always ask for cash or gift cards as they cannot be tracked or canceled before the payment is complete.
As always, if you believe you are being targeted by a scammer, you are encouraged to hang up the phone and call the organization or entity that is claiming to call you.
If it was a scam, you are also encouraged to report it to your local law enforcement agency to help other avoid being the next victim.
