A judge has ruled in favor of the state’s ability to compel large dairy farms to obtain environmental permits before managing their manure.
The Calumet County judge emphasized that state law empowers the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to proactively safeguard Wisconsin’s waterways, granting the DNR authority to enforce permits, ensuring that dairy farms’ manure disposal does not pollute local water systems.
Despite opposition from dairy farmers who argued against federal interference, the judge highlighted a specific provision in Wisconsin law allowing for such regulatory measures.
