The trial for the man accused of burning down Butch’s Bar in Sturgeon Bay is now in the wait-and-see phase.
According to a report from WFRV in Green Bay, the closing arguments were made by the prosecution and the defense team for Anthony Gonzalez on Monday, and the jury decided to begin their deliberation this morning (January 30th).
Gonzalez was arrested after he allegedly started his bed on fire while lighting a cigarette in his apartment above the bar nearly two years ago.
He had reportedly spilled butane on the mattress before attempting to light the cigarette.
The defense is claiming that the building was a “fire trap” while the state argued that Gonzalez’s actions are what made it a fire trap.
Two people ended up dying in the blaze, and the building was completely destroyed.
