It was a night to remember for the Manitowoc United Hockey team.
The squad comprised of players from several Manitowoc County schools honored their teammate Sam Hinz who suffered a career ending back injury earlier in the year, and used that motivation to take down the WNS co-op from the Whitefish Bay area 3-2 in a shootout.
The vistors would beat United goalie Dan Karlin early in the first perioid, but defenceman David Klein would break out a big spin move to enter the WNS zone, and would snipe the top corner to knot it up.
United would take the lead halfway through the second period when Ethan Christensen would bounce a shot off the back of the WNS goalieās leg and into the net.
WNS would tie it up again late in the 3rd,ending regulation in a fitting 2-2 tie, as that is the number Hinz wore.
The teams agreed to do a five man shootout to determinea winner.
Both teams would score once through four shooters, leaving Jacob Wallander to take the 10th and final free shot.
He would beat the netminder between his legs to secure the win, and would celebrate by holding two fingerts up on each hand to honor his teammate.
Goalie Dan Karlin would end the night with 17 saves, while Captain Benson Dickrell assisted on both goals for United.
Manitowoc is back in action Saturday night as they host the Madison Area U18 team for a weekend double header.
The Saturday game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. while the Sunday game is at 9:30 a.m.
