The right-to-garden legislation in Wisconsin is making a return to the Capitol, this time for consideration by a Senate committee.
The proposed plan, co-authored by Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere and Assemblyman Shae Sortwell of Two Rivers, aims to prohibit local governments from mandating permits or licenses for cultivating vegetables or flowers in private yards.
Senator Jacque emphasizes the idea’s focus on individual freedom and the ability to cultivate personal produce.
The plan has garnered support in the State Assembly.
The idea was planted in the legislator’s brains by Two Rivers City Councilwoman Darla LeClair, who was the driving force behind the Cool City’s Front Yard Vegetable Garden pilot program, which is entering its second year.
