Motorists and semi-tractor drivers are being promised a smoother ride and a little more space.
That is the general consensus of the South 30th Street reconstruction plan presented by Ayres Transportation at Tuesday night’s public inclusion meeting in the City of Manitowoc.
The roadway between Dewey and Viebahn streets will be one foot wider on each side with additional bike and parking lanes and a storm sewer replacement along with the pavement.
One major change that is coming is the driveway on the south side of the Alliance Laundry property is being moved 10 feet north, while all of the rest of the driveways along the entire stretch will be completely replaced.
There will also be a new one place between Alliance and Robinson Metal.
Project Manager Troy Robillard told Seehafer News that working with those companies was a big priority.
“We know that parking is all along the west side, and there’s four major crossings for pedestrians along the roadway,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we restore those and keep them up to date during construction.”
As far as traffic is concerned during the estimated three-month project, there will always be traffic flowing to the north in a single lane while work is done on the other lane.
Traffic on Dewey and Viebahn will not be affected, however, there may be a change to the traffic light at Dewey.
When work is being done on the west side, the light may change to a timing system as there is no traffic sensor on that side of the roadway to trigger the light to change.
Greg Minikel, the Engineering Division Manager for the City of Manitowoc, says this project is pretty straightforward.
“We are not planning on any water main replacement or any sanitary sewer replacement,” he explained. “Only some storm sewer improvements on the far south end of the project.”
While the project is estimated to cost $2,675,900, the city’s portion of that is only $535,580.
The rest is coming from the bipartisan infrastructure law passed earlier this year.
As of right now, the project is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2026, however, the exact start time may fluctuate based on Contractor pricing.
