Legislators in Madison are contemplating a proposal ensuring freedom for student journalists to cover the stories they choose.
The new legislation aims to prevent high schools and universities from exercising “prior restraint” on student newspapers, prohibiting the editing or blocking of stories disliked by the administration.
Supported by both Republicans and Democrats, the proposal seeks to clarify the law following a 1988 Supreme Court ruling allowing schools to edit student newspapers as they are sponsored by the school.
