A bill penned by two local legislators is one step closer to becoming law.
The Vegetable Garden Protection Act, written by Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere and Representative Shae Sortwell of Two Rivers, passed an Assembly committee Thursday (November 16th), meaning it now heads to the full assembly.
The idea behind the bill, which has bipartisan support, is to strike a reasonable balance between private property rights, localized “grow your own” food supplies, concern for pollinators, and legitimate community standards and public safety.
The measure was actually spearheaded by Two Rivers Councilwoman Darla LeClair, who was the driving force behind a front yard vegetable garden pilot program in the Cool City.
She previously told Seehafer News that the local program was two-pronged.
First, it allowed people to save money by growing their own food, and two, it helped people eat healthier.
Sen. Jacque and Rep. Sortwell have noted that the public has voiced interest in this legislation and that Illinois and Florida have similar laws on the books.
