The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department played a role in the capture of a scammer from Connecticut.
26-year-old Matthew Ramos-Soto was arrested earlier this week after he allegedly conspired with others to defraud Wisconsin residents out of an estimated $200,000.
Ramos-Soto and his co-conspirators were said to have received $5,000 from an individual in Wrightstown, $17,545 from an individual in Fitchburg, and $12,500 from an individual in Hobart through the grandparents’ scam.
This is when the fraudsters call elderly residents and claim that a child or grandchild is in jail and needs bail money.
Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were aided in their investigation by fourteen local law enforcement agencies, including Manitowoc, Outagamie, and Brown County Sheriff’s Departments, and the Wrightstown, Green Bay, Oshkosh, and Fond du Lac Police Departments.
