Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and the Department of Corrections have announced a plan to address the issues at a couple of state prisons, including one in Allouez.
The goal of the plan is to improve conditions at the Waupun and Green Bay Correctional Institutions and to restore movement for inmates.
Village of Allouez President Jim Rafter sent Seehafer News a letter following the announcement, saying “We commend the Governor for taking initial steps to recognize the seriousness of the problems facing GBCI, but there’s so much more that needs to be done.”
The village president called for the complete closure of the GBCI, calling it a “powder keg” and claimed that the 125-year-old facility “poses a considerable safety threat to our community.”
Rafter closed by saying “I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure lawmakers and the governor prioritize the safety of our community and work towards the closure of GBCI.”
