1st District State Senator Andre Jaque is co-sponsoring a bill to make hiding, burying, or mutilating a corpse a more serious crime.
Currently, Wisconsin State law has the charge as a Class F felony subject to a fine of no more than $25,000 and a maximum of 12 years in prison.
The bill would update the crime to a Class C felony, meaning a fine of no more than $100,000 and a maximum of 40 years in prison.
The legislation says because the bill creates a new crime or revises a penalty for an existing crime, the Wisconsin Joint Review Committee on Criminal Penalties may be requested to prepare a report.
