The head coach of the Manitowoc Lincoln Football team has been fired from his role. Below is a letter he sent to Seehafer News on the issue.
To whom it may concern
I have been informed by the school district that I have been relieved of my coaching duties. This was not a mutual agreement, and I would have preferred to end my coaching career in Manitowoc. The only reason that I was given for the district’s decision was a “lack of performance”. This “lack of performance” was never discussed with me by district administration including principals, the athletic director, or administrators at central office. There were never any performance plans or written goals for improvement in any meetings with administration.
The necessary feedback and means of measuring success outside of wins and losses was never afforded to me or considered. In any profession, it is important to have clear expectations and measurable goals including expectations beyond the final score.
At no point was my professionalism or conduct questioned by administration, as I have always strived to maintain a high level of professionalism and integrity in my role as a coach and educator.
Lastly, I understand that the decision to terminate coaching contracts is often based on the school’s needs and priorities, and may not require specific justifications. While this letter may seem like a moot point, I wanted to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the head football coach and my commitment to continuous growth and improvement. I have had the great fortune to serve as a head coach for over 25 years through many districts and have found in my previous stays to always be provided with a clear understanding. The countless peers and colleagues that I have worked with and met will surely be interested in the process or lack of that took place during my tenure.
I hope that my successor will be provided the clear guidelines and professional courtesy of the job description along with written feedback when standards and expectations are not being met.
I wish the team and the program success in the future.
Sincerely,
Greg Enz
