An Oostburg Senator is not happy with the latest move by Governor Tony Evers.
The governor announced plans yesterday to send $170 million in what he called “emergency funding” to ensure Child Care Counts remains funded at current levels through June of 2025.
Child Care Counts is a federally funded pandemic-era program that has helped keep childcare centers open in an unstable economy.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu voiced his disapproval, pointing to the fact that “Governor Evers vetoed the largest tax cut in state history and then spent months going around the state telling child care providers that they were going to have to close their doors when he could have used ARPA money to preserve Child Care Counts all along.”
He also said, “Governing isn’t a game, and Governor Evers continues to irresponsibly play games with Wisconsin families’ budgets for political purposes.”
The Senate is set to consider an amendment to special session bill 1 today (October 17th), which would, according to LeMahieu, “provide a $2 billion tax cut for Wisconsin families; address child care affordability and availability; and remove barriers to get Wisconsinites back to work.”
