The following article was written by Kristin Keck, a Teen Associate at the Manitowoc Public Library.
Good morning, afternoon, evening! Reading an article can happen anytime, right? I’m Kristin Keck, the Teen Services person here at Manitowoc Public Library. We’ve got some programs coming up—both Teen-Only and All-Ages—that I thought you should know about.
First, the Teen-Only programs. We’re calling them Teen Hang-outs—look for that designation on the website—because they’re very low key. There will be a project to do if you want—last month we made a ghost; come see her near the YA collection—but you can also just have some snacks and talk. These programs will be open to ages 11 to 18.
So, the upcoming Hang-Outs! On October 19, we’ll be making Spellbinding Journals. All materials will be provided—the journal, paints, tissue paper, hot glue (love hot glue!), various molds and stickers, and snacks. The picture with this article has an example of the journal I made—with cat added for scale.
In November, there will be Blackout Poetry and a chance to get wild with some discarded books to make a collage of words and art. We’ll supply the materials; you supply the creativity. And the mess! Looking forward to lots of mess on this one!
December: Let’s Design Mugs! Will we supply the mugs? Yes. Will it get messy? Probably. Will there be snacks? Of course!
In January, we’ll either be doing pop socket art or a White-Elephant-type exchange to painlessly re-gift some of the weird stuff you might have gotten over the holidays (or weird stuff you’ve got lying around your room)! Tell me which you’d rather do—I need input. Email me at kkeck@manitowoc.org to let me know which of those two things interest you most.
Those are the Teen Programs. On to the All-Ages stuff, which may be of interest to Teens, too!

If you’re into cosplay and costuming, make sure you get a picture in our Costume Contest on October 24. We’ve got a raffle prize that will be awarded with a random drawing just for taking a picture. In turn, these pictures will go on the MPL’s Facebook page. The Grand Prize for this portion of the Costume Contest will be an Amazon gift card that will go to the picture with the most reactions. Trunk or Treat will be happening at the same time in the Briess Parking Lot across Quay Street from the Library, so it’s am excellent chance to snag some candy, as well.
I’ve got an article coming out later this month about my love of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). There will be a Prep Party on October26 for an opportunity to learn more information and to decide if NaNoWriMo is right for you. (Hint: it absolutely is! But I’m a fan, and not to be trusted.) Then there will be Come Write In sessions every Tuesday in November for a chance to connect with fellow writers and boost your word count.
That’s all from me for the moment. Keep watching the MPL website (www.manitowoclibrary.org) for updates and more great programs, and come hang out at the Library. We have snacks!
