A judge in Eau Claire has given a local murder suspect two days to come back to the state of Wisconsin.
Shane Helmbrecht, who has been missing since leaving a halfway house in Tomah, had been detained by authorities in New Mexico last week, but he was released because his disappearance was considered a civil matter rather than a criminal one.
The judge warned that if Helmbrecht fails to return to Wisconsin, a warrant for his arrest is likely to be issued.
Helmbrecht had been accused of a murder that took place in 2016, but at the time, he was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial.
Consequently, he was ordered to remain in a state mental health facility.
However, in January, he was transferred to a halfway house.
