The Manitowoc Public School District has ended their enrollment in the Community Eligibility Program which provided free lunches to students during the COVID pandemic.
The decision is leaving the district divided.
Supporters of the idea say that some families who make more than enough money to pay for their student’s meals should be doing just that, while others say that there are some families falling through the cracks.
Free and reduced-price lunches are still available for families who collectively make below a certain amount per student, but opponents of the move say there are some families that are just above those thresholds who will now struggle with this new expense.
That being said, just over half of the students in the district will be eligible for the free and reduced lunch program if they were to opt in.
