The extradition of the wanted individual who absconded from a halfway house in Tomah and was located in New Mexico poses uncertainties for Eau Claire prosecutors.
Shane Helmbrecht was apprehended by authorities in New Mexico on Monday evening.
The Eau Claire County District Attorney’s office has initiated a motion to secure his return to Wisconsin.
However, due to the nature of his departure from the halfway house being considered a civil matter rather than a criminal one, the DA lacks the jurisdiction to mandate his repatriation.
Prosecutors emphasize that bringing Helmbrecht back to Wisconsin is essential for public safety.
Following his detainment in New Mexico on Monday, Helmbrecht’s current whereabouts remain unclear.
