The leaves are getting crunchy, the wind is getting chilly, and if you’re like me, you’re doing your best to enjoy these last few days of sunshine before the weather turns. As we fall back into our busy routines, it’s important to still build some fun and flexibility into our lives. If you have never been to one of my Cats on Mats classes, I would highly suggest adding it to your October calendar of spooky delights.
On Wednesday, October 18, at 6 PM, Lakeshore Humane Society will load up some of their most adorable, adoptable cats (and maybe even some kittens) and we will all gather in the Balkansky Community Room at Manitowoc Public Library. After we roll out our mats and settle in with some gentle, quiet breathing, we’ll set the critters loose and for the next hour enjoy a Halloween-themed yoga practice and some furry kitty companionship.
I like to tell people this yoga practice is a unique and different way to ‘be present’ in the moment. If you’re a regular yoga practitioner, maybe you find it easy to be centered, concentrated, and fully present while on your mat in a studio environment. But, this practice shakes it up. It invites you to giggle and to find that same peace while being cuddled, jumped upon, and nibbled on by some of LHS’s little ones. Life doesn’t happen in a vacuum and neither should your yoga!

This class will be structured to suit both newbies and seasoned yogis alike, so please join us—especially if you have never done yoga before. If you already have a yoga mat or other favorite yoga props, feel free to bring them, otherwise a beach towel or blanket will serve just fine. The only requirements to attend are that you be 18 years of age or older (it’s an adults-only class; my apologies to younger enthusiasts), register ahead of time (at www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/cats-mats-kate-casey-3; registration opens this Friday—October 6, at 5 PM—so don’t dilly-dally as these classes fill up fast), and must love cats!
As with all my community classes at Manitowoc Public Library, there is no cost to attend. But, if you are so moved, I encourage students to bring donations—whether monetary or otherwise—for Lakeshore Humane Society. We will be collecting donations onsite and can take care of delivery to LHS for you. Cats on Mats is a yoga class that both feels good and does good.
Finally, make sure to set a reminder for yourself for when registration opens. Spots always go quickly! Can’t wait to see you there.
