Four legislators in Wisconsin are teaming up to tackle the growing issue of deep fake pornography.
Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere, along with fellow Republican Representative Chuck Wichgers of Muskego and Democratic Representatives Jimmy Anderson of Fitchburg and Marisabel Cabrera of Milwaukee co-wrote a bill that would make posting, publishing, distributing, or exhibiting synthetic intimate representations a Class I felony.
A deep-faked video is one where an actor or actress stands in as a body double for someone else, and the other person’s face is superimposed over the actor’s face, making the same facial expressions.
Many celebrities have been the target of deep fake video makers, including the likes of Taylor Swift, Natalie Portman, and Emma Watson just to name a few.
The Daily Mail reports that the amount of such pornographic material online has doubled over the past year.
Sen. Jacque and the rest of the bill writers also note that the measure would create a new definition of “synthetic intimate representation”.
