The Wisconsin State Senate has overridden three vetoes issued by Governor Tony Evers.
The governor made headlines around the country when he vetoed several sections of the Senate’s proposed budget, including funding increases for schools for the next 400 years.
However, the Senate used a 2/3rds majority to override those vetoes, with Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu calling them “irresponsible”.
The senator from Oostburg also said, “The Governor’s original budget recommendations would have turned Wisconsin’s $7 billion surplus into a $3 billion deficit by 2027. His budget would have raised taxes, expanded welfare, and turned a historic surplus into a record deficit.”
LeMahieu praised his fellow senators, calling on legislators to “return the state’s surplus to Wisconsin taxpayers.”
It should be noted that the Assembly will also have to have a 2/3rds majority in order to complete the override.
