Charges have been filed against former Monroe County deputy, 29-year-old Detective Alexander Maas, in connection with the heartbreaking incident that led to the death of his police K9, Kolt.
This week, prosecutors lodged a single charge of animal mistreatment against Maas, who was responsible for leaving Kolt in a hot squad car back in May.
On that day, temperatures soared to 81 degrees, with the car’s windows tightly shut.
In the state of Wisconsin, mistreating an animal constitutes a misdemeanor offense, carrying a potential penalty of up to nine months in jail and a fine of ten thousand dollars.
Following the loss of Kolt, Maas was suspended from duty and, subsequently, resigned from the sheriff’s department approximately two weeks later.
