The Manitowoc Parks and Recreation Department will be at Silver Creek Park next week to battle an invasive species.
Dan Koski, the City’s Director of Public Infrastructure says that crews from Stantec Consulting Services Inc. will be in sections of the Park on South 10th Street Monday and Tuesday spraying herbicide on patches of Japanese Knotweed.
This bamboo-like plant has stems that grow up to 10 feet tall. If left untreated, Japanese knotweed takes the place of native vegetation in the landscape creating an almost impenetrable wall of cane-like plants.
This restoration effort is part of a multi-year grant-funded project in partnership with the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership and Stantec Consulting LLC for the removal of Japanese Knotweed throughout Manitowoc County as well as surrounding counties.
