The top-seeded Cedar Rapids Kernels had little trouble picking up five more wins last week as they nearly swept the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
The Kernels dispatched the Rattlers 4-1 Sunday, securing a 5-1 series win.
In the finale, the Kernels plated four runs in the 3rd inning, and the pitching staff shut down the Rattlers’ offense, allowing only six total hits.
In fact, the Rattlers actually outhit the Kernels 6-4, but one of those hits for the home team was a three-run homer off of starter Edwin Jiminez.
He pitched the first four and one-third innings allowing 3 hits and 4 runs to go along with three walks.
Nick Merkel came on in relief and allowed only one hit while Tanner Shears closed out the 8th inning by allowing no baserunners at all.
Matthew Wood was the only Rattler hitter to get more than one hit going 2 for 3 at the plate.
Wisconsin will take today off before taking on a visiting Quad Cities River Bandits team at home starting Tuesday.
