The S.S. Badger ending its season early has put a lot of travel plans in jeopardy. One such plan was the second game of the Manitowoc Lincoln Shipbuilders’ football season against Mona Shores Michigan.
Last year, Lincoln made the trip to Mona Shores using the Badger, giving the game the title “The Battle of the Badger”.
While it won’t quite be the same for the Sailors, they will be coming to Manitowoc.
“The beautiful thing is Muskegon, which Mona Shores is a suburb of, has the Lake Ferry Express which runs from Muskegon to Milwaukee,” Manitowoc Lincoln Coach Greg Enz explained. “[It’s] a little more expensive, they said, but they were able to work some details to make it happen.”
On top of the stress of potentially trying to fill an empty week two slot, Coach Enz said that the Sailors coming to Manitowoc was important because they had shown the Shipbuilders a phenomenal time last year.
“I think it’s important for us as a community to put our best face on and show people from another state and another part of the country that this is a quality community that offers a lot of things,” he said. “We have a vibrant downtown, and so many things that our mayor and city council have been doing to try to improve how our community presents itself.”
Also, to help cut the costs for Mona Shores, Coach Enz revealed that the Manitowoc Public School District will be sending busses to Milwaukee to pick up Mona Shores when they land.
