While Manitowoc County has been lucky in terms of severe weather this summer, planning ahead is always a good idea.
Kayla Beckerdite, the Manitowoc County Emergency Services Director for the County, was on the WCUB Breakfast Club this week, where she spoke about what you should do if a tornado warning or severe weather warning were to be announced.
“That’s the time to get your family inside, get away from windows, get to the lowest level of the house if possible,” she said. “I know the whole midwestern joke is everyone goes out on the front porch to watch the severe weather coming in…but try to keep you and your family safe.”
She also spoke with host Craig Dillon about what you should have in your home in preparation for severe weather.
“You want to make sure you have food, water, (and) medications for any member of your family, including pets,” she instructed. “It’s really important, whether it’s a severe thunderstorm warning or a tornado warning, to have that weather radio, to have an AM/FM radio with you so you can know what’s going on, just in case we lose power.”
Beckerdite also noted that some AM/FM radios are hand-crank powered, but for those that are battery operated, you should regularly replace those batteries to stay as prepared as possible.
