The Manitowoc County Board has determined that in order to pay for the upcoming Courthouse dome renovation project, residents of the county will have to pay more in property tax.
The Board met Tuesday to discuss the $30 million project and its funding.
The Finance and Public Works Committees suggest borrowing the cash needed, but it was also argued that since Manitowoc County is one of only four in the state without a county sales tax, that could be implemented.
However, the Board went in a different direction, and raise the County property tax from 5% to 6%.
That equates to about $25 more per $100,000 of property value.
The planning for this project began just under a year ago, as the courthouse turned 115 years old.
A study was conducted on the building by Strang Architectural, which revealed the dome and HVAC systems needed to be addressed.
