Hello, July!
Isn’t this a wonderful time of the year, with more natural light, birds pleasantly singing (except for the darn seagulls), amazing lakeshore outings, and in the not-too-distant future, a few thousand books just waiting for shoppers to claim them.
Yes! Our annual Friends of Manitowoc Public Library Used Book Sale will be taking place in mid-July this year. The dates for the Sale this year will be July 13, 14, and 15!
MPL is closed on Sundays in summer, so we will have Stuff-a-Bag on Saturday, July 15, from 9 AM until 2:30 PM when the sale closes. We certainly wouldn’t dream of taking that away from everyone who looks forward to it!
There are too many topics and authors and items to list, of course. It’s nearly a mini-library in and of itself, but you get to purchase items and make them yours! We have a few unusual items that have found their way to our Library and those will be for sale, also. We have a desk phone stand, “clickers” for PowerPoints, and, well, it’s probably better if you just stop in and see!
Now, you may not think that you need very many books, but you can also put the word out to friends and family. Maybe buy a handful to fill up someone’s “Little Free Library” or take some fun children’s books along for grandkids on vacation. And speaking of vacation, it’s definitely worth fifty-cents for a paperback to take along on a getaway without even having to worry if you’re going to leave it somewhere or drop it in a pool while you’re relaxing.
Has streaming movies put you off DVD purchases? You still might find a favorite oldie or just come across one that you’ve always meant to see. At just $2 a pop, it’s not a great expense for a movie you can enjoy and then maybe pass along to someone else. You never know what titles you may find!
And music? Lots of music CDs will be available, as well. Something to sing along with, dance to, or maybe lay back in a lawn chair and listen to. Sip something cool and make a toast to the great deal you got. LOL!!!

There happens to be at least one other fun activity happening in Manitowoc on the same weekend as our book sale. Just another way to add to a great weekend! There’s a Sand Sculpting Festival at the Red Arrow Park Beach. It’s always a great time if you can squeeze in more than one activity on a great summer day! I don’t doubt that there will be even more fun things happening around town that I haven’t heard about by the time our Used Book Sale rolls around.
Here’s a thought: stop at our Service Desk and pick-up a State Park Pass. It will be good for only one day and there are a few prerequisites to getting one:
- You must have Wisconsin license plates on your car to use it
- Your Library Card must be in good standing
- You must have a definite, specific date that you plan to use it
- The passes can be used at any Wisconsin State Park, but are not good for driving trails that cost extra
- You could visit more than one park in a day
Think about this possibility to top off your Used Book Sale weekend or just pick one up for a separate upcoming day.
Please remember that the Used Book Sale operates on a cash or local check-only basis. We have an ATM located on MPL’s First Floor near the Main Service Desk should you need it.
Also, please have patience with our volunteers staffing during our sale, including at the payment table. These volunteers do a great job of handling these solidly-busy days. We know everyone is anxious to get home with their treasures and sometimes the lines get a little congested. We appreciate your patience!
So, for now, just enjoy the anticipation of the upcoming Used Book Sale and all of the great books and other materials waiting for new homes.
Remember These Dates:
- Thursday, July 13, Noon ‘til 7:30 PM
- Friday, July 14, 9 AM ‘til 5:30 PM
- Saturday, July 15, 9 AM ‘til 2:30 PM (Stuff-a-Bag!)
- Cash or Local Check Only!
See you at the Sale!
