The Two Rivers City Council has made the decision to make some drastic changes to Zander Park.
This change to the park is a controversial subject for the people of Two Rivers, some liked the park the way it was.
However, during Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Mike Mathis explained that he believes this change is for the better.
“The old playground at Zander was removed just before I started last year I think, in pretty rough shape and would’ve had to be replaced at some point very soon,” he explained. “The flooding over there makes it really not an ideal situation for a playground at all, at least a traditional style playground.”
He also noted that they removed 31 dead trees from the park, which were dangerous for those who utilized the space.
Mathis also said that when it’s all said and done, the park is going to be a “cool, natural play area.”
He explained that there are “going to be lots of rocks to jump on, some wood play features, a story trail, native plantings are going to help hopefully soak up some of the water, and the water issues there. So hopefully very cool things coming soon.”
As Mathis explained, the changes that are being made are for safety reasons concerning the dead trees along with flooding.
They are taking action to fix these issues with the goal of improving Zander Park.
