Governor Tony Evers Official Portrait
Wisconsin’s governor, Governor Evers, is expected to make swift decisions regarding the new state budget, with action anticipated as early as this week, according to the governor’s office.
Recently, state lawmakers finalized a comprehensive spending plan amounting to $99 billion for the next two years.
The budget encompasses several key elements, including $10 billion allocated for new spending.
However, it also incorporates a $4 billion tax cut and a $32 million reduction in funding for the University of Wisconsin.
Both of these provisions have drawn the governor’s disapproval, leading to discussions about the possibility of vetoing them from the budget entirely.
Governor Evers has expressed a willingness to exercise his partial veto power extensively.
This mechanism enables him to selectively strike down specific sections of the budget while preserving the remaining legislation.
By utilizing partial vetoes, the governor aims to shape the budget to align more closely with his priorities and eliminate elements he finds objectionable.
