The Manitowoc Police Department is reporting an increase in theft from boats.
In a post on Facebook, the Department noted that the thefts are most often a crime of opportunity, as the thief is taking advantage of valuable fishing equipment being left unsecured or in plain view.
The local law enforcement agency is encouraging citizens to “store their boats and other recreational vehicles in well-lit areas or inside of a locked garage and refrain from leaving valuable fishing equipment unsecured or in plain view during the hours of darkness.”
They are also asking people who see suspicious activity to note what is happening, where and when it happened, and a description of the people or vehicles and call 920-686-6500.
