Three young women from Manitowoc County were recently named the recipients of $2,000 scholarships from Prevent Suicide Manitowoc County.
Olivia Miller was honored with the PFC Morgan Daly Scholarship, and she tells Seehafer News that she plans on helping reduce the number of suicides.
“I plan on going to UW Milwaukee and studying Psychology,” she explained. “I’m not sure whether or not I want to go into therapy…but I know I want to do something with studying the brain.”
Lexis Nienow was given the SGT. Terry L. Peterson scholarship.
She tells us that mental health struggles have affected many people in her life.
“Mental health has affected my mom, my grandma, my aunt, it’s affected my best friend and I had to witness that, I myself have been struggling with it,” she revealed. “So I know important mental health is to the community, to your friends, to your family.”
Lexis says she plans on getting into clinical psychology at UW Milwaukee.
The final scholarship, known as the Directors Choice Honorary Scholarship, was awarded to Savannah Sinkula, who will be taking a different approach to addressing mental health.
“I’m going to school at NWTC for Fire/Medic,” she explained “So I will be working with mental health in a different aspect in being the first responder to mental health calls.”
The Prevent Suicide Manitowoc County Board selected these three young women from a pool of dozens for their personal stories about mental health, and for their desire to help battle the disease in their careers.
