In one of the most contentious votes in quite some time, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which allowed the federal government to increase the debt limit, passed both houses of government last week.
The measure had proponents and opposition from both sides of the political aisle, but one legislator that was for it was Congressman Glenn Grothman.
The Glenbeulah native noted that since he was first elected into the office, there have been six debt ceiling increases, “none of which did anything to curb spending and instead increased it along with the deficit.”
Grothman said that this one is different as it “cut back on out-of-control government spending.”
He specifically noted the reduction of non-defense spending by $40 billion, the lifting of the maximum age for work requirements for SNAP’s able-bodied adults without dependents from 49 to 54, and the rescinding of $1.4 billion in funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to hire IRS enforcement agents.
Grothman did admit the measure was not perfect, but said it will hold “the Executive Branch accountable for its deliberate, willful fiscal irresponsibility.”
