A national animal rights group is calling on the Fond du Lac County District Attorney to add animal cruelty charges to an ongoing arson case.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, more commonly known as PETA, recently sent a letter to the DAs in Fond du Lac and Washington Counties, which requested the charges be added in the case against Daniel Enright.
He is accused of setting eight fires across both counties since 2020, including in the Kettle Moraine State Forrest.
PETA Senior Evidence Analyst in the Cruelty Investigations Department Sarah Deffinger noted in the letter that the forest is “home to a vast number of species, including sandhill cranes, spotted salamanders, and star-nosed moles” which she said likely suffered and died painfully in the fires.
PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch said in an email to Seehafer News, “The person responsible for so much suffering should face charges, and PETA is asking anyone who found an animal harmed or killed due to one of these wildfires to please come forward.”
As of now, Enright has been charged with five counts of Intentionally Setting Fire to Another’s Land and two counts of Arson of Property Other Than a Building in Fond du Lac County, on one count of the first charge in Washington County.
