In Wisconsin, 2023 will be the bloodiest year for police and sheriff’s deputies since the 1990s.
Sheriff Scott Knudson of St. Croix County acknowledged Wednesday that one of his deputies, Deputy Katie Leising, had been killed by a gunshot over the weekend.
In Wisconsin, she is the fourth police officer to die thus far this year.
She was the third cop to be killed in western Wisconsin in the previous two months.
In April, two additional Barron County officers were shot and murdered. In February, a burglary suspect in Milwaukee shot and killed a police officer.
Even though May has only just begun, the sheriff is already concerned about the remainder of the year.
